Hormone Replacement Therapy

As women age their natural release of the hormones estrogen, progesterone and testosterone decrease and symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, brain fog, weight gain, irritability/depression and reduced libido often become very debilitating. Hormone replacement is an option for women to replace these hormone deficiencies and achieve symptom relief.

Vaginal preparations are also available to treat symptoms such as vaginal dryness and painful intercourse. However, they do not provide the relief from systemic symptoms such as night sweats, moodiness and hot flashes.

There are certain patients who are not candidates for hormone replacement therapy such as women who have experienced breast or ovarian cancers or those with clotting disorders. For these patients, there are non-hormonal medications that can temporarily provide symptom relief. For those seeking a more effective non-hormonal option, Women's Surgery & Aesthetics Center offers MonaLisa Touch for vaginal complaints such as dryness and painful intercourse.

As with any medication, there are known risks associated with hormone replacement therapy. It is imperative that you discuss your medical history thoroughly with your provider before undergoing treatment.

There are many ways to provide hormone replacement and our Nurse Practitioners will discuss with you the safest and most effective therapy based on your symptoms, goals and medical history.

Bio-Identical Hormones

Bio- Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is derived from plant-based estrogens that are chemically identical to those in the human body. Therapy options include compounded troches, topical creams and pellets. Compounded hormones unlike other non-compounded options allows your provider to adjust your dosing regimens based on your specific symptoms allowing for a more customized treatment plan. Other benefits to hormone replacement are symptom improvement in mood, sleep quality, bone health, mood and stabilization of weight.

Hormone Pellets

Another option for patients seeking hormone replacement therapy is through hormone pellets. These "rice-sized" pellets are implanted placed under the skin and gradually releases small doses of bio-identical hormones, providing an optimal delivery of estradiol or testosterone. Unlike other forms of hormone therapy pellets avoid the “up and down” fluctuations of hormone levels. With pellets patients can experience sustained hormone levels for three to four months.

Insertion is easily performed during a simple office procedure where customized pellets are placed just under the skin in the fatty tissue of the upper buttocks. The slow release of hormones from the pellets closely mimic the function of healthy ovaries in regards to hormone release into the bloodstream. Additionally, pellets do not need to be removed and completely dissolve on their own.

If you are considering hormone therapy, the first step is to schedule a consultation with one of our highly trained Nurse Practitioners to discuss your specific symptoms, health history and goals. We are here to help you achieve your best life!
